Programme Development Advisor Ernst Suur in Uganda sees communities in war torn Northern Uganda slowly recovering. “We involve the total community in our programmes. You can throw a ball to each other and say something nice to one another, but if the children come back in their villages and are drenched in violence again, things will never improve. That’s why we work with parents, teachers, social workers and children on peace building.
With sport championships we often reach complete villages, everybody comes to take a look at what’s happening. This way everybody gets involved in the reconstruction of their village. Adults take the community by hand, get busy to get things organized. It takes time, but if everybody helps, something beautiful will grow. We are not the only ones who are convinced by this approach. The International Olympic Committee was impressed by our method and supported the project financially.”
